Gael Monfils retires without planned Paris farewell

Gael Monfils retires without planned Paris farewell

The 40-year-old is on the ITIA retired list from 5 October 2026, ending hopes of Lyon and Paris appearances after his US Open exit.

Gael Monfils has officially retired from professional tennis, closing his career without the expected farewell at the Paris Masters in Bercy. The International Tennis Integrity Agency confirmed that the 40-year-old Frenchman has been on its retired players list since 5 October 2026, a status that makes him ineligible for upcoming tournaments.

The mechanism is procedural but decisive. Players on the ITIA retired list are removed from active anti-doping obligations; to return to competition, they must make themselves available for random testing for at least six months. That rules out the ATP 250 event in Lyon and the ATP Masters 1000 in Paris at the start of November, where Monfils had been expected to make his last appearance.

Monfils had announced in October 2025 that the 2026 season would be his final year on tour. He had received a wildcard for Lyon and was widely expected to end at Bercy, a domestic finish that would have matched the route taken by the other leading French players of his generation.

There had been no public statement from Monfils on Wednesday, 14 October 2026 explaining the change. The last official singles match of his career is therefore his second-round defeat by Learner Tien at the US Open in early September.

The final match came in New York

Monfils’ final tournament still contained one last measurable marker. His first-round win over Adolfo Daniel Vallejo at Flushing Meadows made him the third man aged 40 or older to win a match at the US Open in the Open era, after Ken Rosewall in 1977 and Jimmy Connors in 1992.

He also reached the semi-finals of the mixed doubles at the US Open with his wife, Elina Svitolina, before they lost to Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli. After his singles run ended, Monfils was presented with a commemorative plaque marking 18 years of US Open appearances.

The early stop removes the staged home ending that had appeared likely. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga finished at Roland Garros in 2022, Gilles Simon ended at Bercy in 2022 and Richard Gasquet retired at Roland Garros in 2025. Monfils, described as the last of that generation’s French “musketeers”, exits through an administrative list rather than a final match in France.

A career closed by the anti-doping clock

Monfils turned professional in 2004, reached a career-high ranking of world No. 6 and won 13 ATP Tour singles titles. His first came in Poland in 2005 and his last came in Auckland in January 2025.

That Auckland title, won when he was 38, made him the oldest player to win a main-tour title since 1977, a record later broken by Novak Djokovic. Monfils also reached the fourth round of the 2025 Australian Open, beating world No. 4 Taylor Fritz during that run.

His best Grand Slam singles results were semi-final appearances at the French Open in 2008 and the US Open in 2016. He also reached three Masters 1000 finals.

Monfils had said in September that he intended to move into finance and become a wealth manager for a Swiss company after tennis. With his name now on the ITIA retired list, that transition has begun earlier than the Paris farewell his schedule had implied.
